In Memory of Hermann De Craecker

This week, we received the sad news of the passing of former Dystonia Europe Treasurer, Hermann De Craecker of Belgium.

Hermann joined the Board of Dystonia Europe in 2005 and immediately took on the role of Treasurer. With dedication and integrity, he served in this capacity until his retirement in 2012. During those years, he not only ensured careful financial oversight of the organisation, but also carried out the practical, hands-on work that kept everything running smoothly behind the scenes.

Beyond his work at European level, Hermann was deeply committed nationally. He served for several years as a board member of the Belgian Dystonia Association and as Secretary of the Belgian Brain Council, an organisation bringing together clinicians, scientists and patients, inspired by the model of the European Brain Council.

On a personal note, Hermann was part of the “old team” — together with Alistair Newton, late Ginger Butler and late Didi Jackson — who warmly welcomed me into the dystonia family in 2006. When everything was new to me, Hermann was always patient, supportive and generous with his time. I remember the many hours we spent going through reports and figures. He was meticulous, knowledgeable and always eager to share his experience. I learned a great deal from him.

Hermann’s contribution to the dystonia community was significant and lasting. His commitment, reliability and kindness will be remembered with gratitude.

Thank you, Hermann, for all the good work you did for the dystonia community.

Our heartfelt thoughts are with his wife Greta and their family during this difficult time.
